KiptonART Artist Studio Visit This Saturday: Azadeh Ghotbi
This Saturday at 2pm join KiptonART as we head to Tribeca and visit the studio space of abstract artist Azadeh Ghotbi. Ghotbi's paintings are spontaneous outbursts of free form expression driven by the quest to find the right balance between total control and the elusive element of chance. "Azadeh Ghotbi's pieces inspire thought while not assaulting senses in a contrived manner which sadly is often the norm among modern painters." - Peter Castro, People Magazine's Deputy Managing Editor.

Asia Society Launches Asia Week with AllThingsArtASIA!
Asia Society kicked off Asia Week with AllThingsArtAsia brilliantly last Tuesday despite the torrential downpour that lapped at the hems of long evening dresses. Guests such as Henry Hwang Gordon, Richard Meier, Mira Nair, Adam Platt, Alice Schroeder, NYC's Comptroller John Liu and Arden Wohl attended. Collectors had a private preview and tour of the Museum's exhibitions Arts of Ancient Viet Nam: From River Plain to Open Sea and Pilgrimage and Buddhist Art.
Public art is a funny thing: it can be the safest and least interesting art on the planet, so low key and quiet that it is hardly ever noticed. Public art can be misguided, thinking that it is achieving one things, while barely approaching the level that it strives to engage the viewer on. And once in awhile, a public art installation comes along that transcends the idea of being art presented in public. It becomes art that uses the public space it inhabits as a unique and priceless canvas. Case in point, the recently inaugurated installation of Antony Gromley's "Event Horizon" in Lower Manhattan... - written by KiptonART Rising 2010 Winner Avery McCarthy Click here to read the article in the Online Magazine

Get to know Josee Nadeau, an artist who is currently showcasing work at this weekends International Artexpo in New York City.
Who is your biggest influence or inspiration right now?
My biggest inspiration at this time is my surroundings, and what captures my emotions. Whether it is from where I go or the people I meet. From a scent of a flower, texture from fabric or movement of the wind in the mane of a horse. How the light bounces from the sky and how it is projected elsewhere. That it is from my paintings of the interior of a Cafe to the beauty of the outdoors. Atmosphere is the most important aspect including the essence of what it creates.

KiptonART Artist Matthew Satz talks about his upcoming installation
What inspired you for the series you are showing at 34 Greene Street?
The work at Greene Street represents several bodies of work that I have been developing over the last decade. Smoke paintings, strip paintings, and by-products have all evolved form a determination to find intelligent and elegant solutions to challenges posed by a history of painting.
Concept + Process = Aesthetic
The first U.S. installation of Yin Xiuchen's large-scale sculpture Collective Subconscious (2007) creates a refuge within the harried space of midtown and a place for conversation and contemplation. MoMA visitors are invited to climb inside the caterpiller-like construction, which is actually a minivan lengthened to 38 feet via a central tube and covered in a patchwork of secondhand garments. The work depicts Xiuchen's fascination with the rapid social and environmental changes in urban China, as communal discussions and shared property have been eclipsed by aspirations of individual material success.
Last night we trekked uptown to Sotheby's for the Tools for Thought Benefit to help rebuild Haiti. We are pleasantly surprised to find that there does not seem to be any benefit exhaustion for this cause, because as we all know, they need all the help we can get. Tools for the Thought is just the first of several efforts to unite the art community to help provide aid and support those in need.
Our group included Emma Snowdon-Jones, Anisha Lakhani and Naeem Delbridge. We entered the space and were struck by the dozens of pieces of artwork donated to the cause. We bid on a Jeff Koons piece that was off to one corner but no matter how hard we tried, we couldn't stop others from seeing it and were soon out bid and out priced. Since all proceeds are going to charity we aren't bitter.

KiptonART ART TALK with Director of the Art Production Fund Casey Fremont
Who are your favorite KiptonART artists? Why? I am very moved by the work of photographer Kiritin Beyer. I think Beyer's photographs are beautifully composed. The images are quiet, sensitive, and extremely powerful. His portraits capture a very intimate moment with the subject and very effectively communicate this intimacy and the subtleties of the moment to the viewer. Samantha Kelly Smith's paintings are absolutely beautiful and complex. She brings the canvases to life with intense drama. There is amazing depth to her abstract works.
KiptonART Featured Artist Interview: Greg Holliday
KiptonART interviewed artist Greg Holliday about his work, life and inspiration: Who/what is your biggest influence or inspiration right now?
The work of Mark Rothko has been an influence. Right now however...My Life... in a state of flux.
What is the first thing that comes to mind after an opening?
Did I just do that?
Why do you work in this medium?
I enjoy working with vibrant color. The ability to manipulate texture and color is a creative plus!
KiptonART Featured Gallery: Michelle Rosenfeld Gallery
Name of Gallery: Michelle Rosenfeld Gallery Location: 16 East 79th St., New York Specialty: Modern and Contemporary Masters Owner: Jason Rosenfeld
What is the history of the gallery?
My mother Michelle Rosenfeld started the gallery in 1970. Her initial interest resided in Pop Art, and was one of the first people to deal with Keith Herring. She had a real passion for the arts and it translated down to me. Ever since I can remember I have been involved with the gallery one way or another. I went to school for art history at the University of Maryland. If you grow up in and around a business you either take to it or go the extreme opposite. I enjoy the art world very much and am fortunate that my mother began this gallery.
Two Exhibits Opening at The Metropolitan Museum of Art
Opening today are two new exhibits at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. The first is a collection of impressive artworks from Oberlin College accompanied by the exhibit Tutankhamun's Funeral exploring the burial process of a young Pharaoh. Masterworks spanning from 16th century to the 20th have arrived from Oberlin College, Ohio. Rather than being grouped displayed in a private room the 19 paintings and single statue have been curated throughout the Museum near works of similarity, both in time period and caliber...
End of Fall 2010 Fashion Shows: Closing of Rodarte at Cooper-Hewitt Museum
Things happen faster in teams. With most artists waiting at least a decade for a retrospective of iconic works, Laura and Kate Mulleavy waiting half that time. Founded in 2005, their innovative fashion designs have soared to immeasurable success. Zero formal training arguable makes them the most successful young designers of the contemporary market. Both attended Berkley, Laura focused on literature and Kate art history. An evolutionary process ensued. Storytelling bridged with artistic knowledge created Rodarte, labeled after their mother's maiden name. Their first meeting in New York was with Women's Wear Daily, three days later they were on the journal's cover accompanied by a phone call from Anna Wintour.
Right now Yugoslavian-born artist Marina Abramovic is seated, silent and motionless, at a wooden table in the Museum of Modern Art's second-floor atrium. She will remain in this position until May 31st for a total duration of 700 hours, marking her most ambitious endurance test to date. Unlike 2002's The House with the Ocean View, which required Abramovic's to live in Sean Kelly Gallery for 12 days without eating, drinking or sleeping. The Artist is Present allows her to leave every evening upon the museum's closing. But this trial of resolve is no less physically demanding than the Kelly performance, especially considering the artist's current age of 63. It is no less daring than Rhythm 0 (1974), when the artist invited her audience to use an assortment of 72 objects on her as she remained silent and passive for six hours, which resulted in her being stripped naked, cut with razor blades and threatened with a loaded gun held to her head.
KiptonART ART TALK with Fashion Designer Yotam Solomon
Who are your favorite KiptonART Artists? Why? Julie Combal: Her paintings express many feelings and demonstrate much emotion, which is very inspirational. She thinks outside of the box and expresses her feelings through earth tones and imagery that is more complex in her abstract pieces. Ula Einstein: Absolutely beautiful forms that are innovative and delicate yet make a very strong statement. She keeps with the natural colors of the objects, while exploring the conditions of which she can create and develop. I admire that.
I adore the shapes and patterns created by Jill Broussard and Daniel Rosenbaum. Their pieces have much substance to them - some could be used as fashion prints.

These for photographers take the idea of utopian nature and the landscape and upend it, questioning and examining our relationship to both nature and the markings humans leave on the environment.

A demure redheaded girl sleeps upon a large bed at Austrian artist, Lies Maculan's photo installation. Her dreams displayed in forms of everyday items symbolizing all we desire: to fly, to be beautiful, to exceed expectations (a mannequins underwear is stuffed to make him "larger" then normal). Being dreams, the items remain intangible existing as photographs on realistic shelves. Hosts, fashion designer Erin Fetherston, Arden Wohl and KiptonART's Kipton Cronkite socialized with guests including Lucy Sykes, event orchestrator Susan Shin, Euan Rellie, Lady Liliana Cavendish, Craig Robinson, Countess LuAnn Lesseps, Chessy Wilson, artist Ellen von Unwerth, Kimberly Guilfoyle, Lara Meiland-Shaw and Mia Morgan in the though provoking atmosphere.
KiptonART ART TALK with socialite and star of MTV's Blonde Charity Mafia, Katherine Kennedy
Who are your favorite KiptonART artists? Why?
Having always been compelled towards the beauty of mixed media, I was awe struck by the use of color in the works of Vivian Rosenthal. I fould such a depth in Ana Heaton'sRed Abstract Number 3 that was second to none. I was quite taken by Jill Tauzin Broussard's remarkable work with oil on wood. Her work in 23 circles would find a home in my living room with such vibrant colors to warm its surroundings. Of all of the work witnessed, I must admit I fell in love with Alchemical Balance by Paul Seftel for his astounding use of transformative color on a textural piece of promise. Intrigued by both his method and talent, I look forward to reading about his continued success and owning a piece in the near future.
